Trauma Skilled Sports & Fitness Coaching

Trauma Skilled Sports & Fitness Coaching

Coaches and activity leaders for all age groups will, whether they know it or not, be interacting with individuals who have experienced significant psychological trauma from adverse experiences as children and/or adults.

Through better understanding how trauma can influence a person’s behaviour and capacity for relationships and learning, we can design and lead inclusive activities that build trust and reduce shame triggers and risks of re-traumatisation.

This programme provides participants with the knowledge and practical skills to adopt a trauma-informed mindset and approach in their coaching and activity leadership.

On completing this programme sports, fitness and activity leaders will:

  • Learn how trauma, including adverse childhood experiences can impact on our capacity for relationships and learning
  • Recognise how trauma can present through an individual's behaviours and responses to people and environments
  • Know how to recognise and avoid trauma and shame triggers
  • Design activities in a way that reduces risk of re-traumatisation
  • Build trust and respond sensitively to challenging situations and participant distress
  • Learn how to use the TAG Calm, Connect, Communicate Model to create safety, build connection and promote engagement, learning and skills acquisition

This programme includes prior learning online and a practical, in-person skills-based course

I think every professional working with kids should learn about trauma informed practice. Really contextualised and engaging course with dynamic activities and practical skills I can apply straight away.
